Deep Bay Marine Field Station: Grey Whale

Working on restoring the 10 metre long Grey Whale at Vancouver Island University’s Deep Bay Field Station was a privilege. The combination of education in marine biology and environmental education background coupled with my love of art and work as a ceramic artist made my days helping to restore the 10 metre skeleton pure joy.

The Garden

Visitors to Sue’s studio will soon see how the garden that surrounds it is a major influence in her work. She has grown ‘things’ in abundance since she was a very little girl and was eventually trained as a Master Gardener. The shapes, textures, colours and even habits of the garden all inform the direction of her work. Her passion for the sacred place she calls ‘her garden’ is evident in everything she touches.

Hawa'ii

North Shore, Oahu

Five years as a member of the Hawaiian Craftsman has informed her love of the Hawaiian people, their appreciation of Raku and Sue’s love of natural history and the special textures only Mother Nature can produce. Her work in Hawaii was awarded the Jeff Chang award of Excellence which was the top award received at the 40th anniversary of Raku Ho’Olaule’a in Oahu.
